Awesome film, just a plain good movie, we loved it, but a bit dark and into the whole drug thing. Sheedy is great. Not tons of sex though.
Illusion
Ally Sheedy's come a long way from the "Brat Pack".
Critic: An intriguing, touching, and somewhat somber look at how success isn't always enough to bring redemption. Excellent acting on all counts, and a plot with some real impact.
Rating: A-
Lover: This is one of those movies that can only be described as real. Syd and Lucy are just meant for each other, and watching them discover that is a charm. At times it's sweet, at other times it's painful, but it's never anything less than real.
Rating: B+
Voyeur: I'll have to admit, I wasn't nuts about the "emaciated junkie" look in some of the female characters. But the love scene between Ally Sheedy and Radha Mitchell was a definite keeper.
Rating: C

MartyM
This was an interesting film that was slow moving at times. Ally Sheedy plays a famous photographer, Lucy Berliner, rediscovered by her neighbor, Syd, a beautiful young blonde assistant editor at a prestigious photo magazine, played by Radha Mitchell. Lucy, who has become drugged out and caught up in a relationship with an older but still very sexy German actress, and who hasn't published photos in ten years, agrees to do a piece that re-reveals her work -- yet dramatizes her life; that life becoming the affair Lucy has with Syd, and the resulting photos of their tryst becoming the published feature and cover shot for the magazine (and for this video). The movie ends abruptly, but poignantly, when a drug overdose concludes their affair just as the magazine is published. The sex is mild but spontaneous, and the kissing is dry with lips (and no tongues) only. Don't expect to be aroused as if watching a more entertaining (adult oriented) piece. The depiction of drug usage in the movie is also fairly frequent. If you're interested in seeing a film with a more real life relationship between two young but emotionally mature women, High Art would make an enjoyable diversion for an afternoon or evening.

I wish there were a LOT more scenes with Ally Sheedy and Radha Mitchell together, but the few scenes they shared in this film were incredible! Ally Sheedy was perfectly cast as the more dominant "butch" girl, and I really liked Radha Mitchell as the pretty blonde girl she seduces! They had a very erotic chemistry together! Again, I only wish they were together more in this film. The story isn't bad either, aside from the druggie stuff. But this is one of those few serious lesbian films that were also enjoyably erotic!
