Description
Emmanuelle is a beautiful young model and lives in Bankok together with her husband Jean, who's several years older. She likes him because he's taught her much, and he likes her because she's learning so well - and wants to often. Both are very tolerant in matters of extramarital affairs, so he doesn't mind the young Marie-Ange coming over so often, although she obviously wants more than talk from his wife. But Emmanuelle is more fascinated by the older Bee, and joins her on a trip into the jungle.

Illusion
One could call this a "voyage of sexual discovery". I call it an unrealistic, preachy message of the 'virtues' of sexual decadence.
Critic: There were some very nice, exotic settings with beautiful scenery. Other than that, I could see little point in watching this movie. The dialog was lame, the deliveries unconvincing, and the plot is so demeaning as to border on misogynistic.
Rating: C+
Lover: At one point, Emmanuelle has a really, really nice fling with another woman which develops tenderly and beautifully. But then it just ends, and after that the rest of the movie sets out to turn her character into a harlot.
Rating: C
Voyeur: In its time, this was some steamy stuff, and even earned an X-rating. Nowadays it's comparatively tame, but still a wonderful showcase of feminine beauty. The lesbian scenes cried out for more follow-through, but were good in terms of build up.

“Emmanuelle” has been so barbered by censors to fit various codes and ratings that the complete and visually stunning "river scene" is gone now. The "river scene is so breathtaking, and photage so well done that we forget the allusions to intense perversity like the "scat" implications of the "shore squat" sub scene, or the rather graphic nature of the orality in the "waterfall" sub scene. Later, the "grass shack" scene with Merika Greene goes from intense to deliberately repetitive in the original uncensored version. The last scene between the "bee" and Emmanuelle with its clear implications of oral-anal contact, scat implications, (though not as pronounced as in the shoreline squat sub scene), and visible tongue play has been missing for so long many people do not remember how exciting this scene really was. The 95 minutes is a give-away that this offering may be heavily censored. the original is some 107 minutes long. A copy of "Adult Film Review" from 1974, remarked that Sylvia Kristel implied that she and Merika Greene WERE NOT faking many of the love scenes. If you find a truly uncensored copy of the original you are in for a very arousing time, even by today's standards!
